Male Infertility and Acupuncture
Infertility is not only a concern for women, but for men too. Male infertility accounts for 23% of fertility issues with couples. We are often asked many questions regarding male sperm health and how Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can help in your journey to becoming parents.
Sperm Health and Infertility
One of the most common questions asked is what can affect my husband’s sperm quantity and quality? The answer is; many things.
There are many factors that can contribute to male infertility including, but not limited to: radiation, environmental toxins, traumatic injury, endocrine disorders, congenital abnormalities, tight underwear and pants, poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, not getting enough rest, alcohol, smoking, and marijuana use. HIHF Acupuncturist Courtney Kenning talks about sperm health.
Another factor leading to male infertility is the possibility that your husband or partner’s immune system could be attacking itself and producing anti bodies that attack the tails of the sperm; this issue can be present in 9-36% of infertile men. Conversely, sometimes women can produce anti bodies that attack their partner’s sperm this can be around 5% of women and these anti bodies are generally affecting the head of the sperm, not the tails.
How can Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine help with Male Infertility?
As we age our fertility decreases. Just like women’s eggs, men’s sperm quality can change throughout his life time. Fortunately, it can be easier to treat a male with infertility issues than it can be to treat a woman and Chinese herbal medicine can help within 4 months.
From a Chinese Medicine perspective there are certain deficiencies within the body that need to be treated to improve fertility. A Kidney Yin deficiency may include such symptoms as: premature ejaculation, impotence, a high percentage of abnormal sperm, restlessness and heat within the body. Kidney Yang deficiency may include such symptoms as: low libido, impotence, low sperm count, chills and lethargy within the body. Damp Heat within the body can be caused from poor diet choices; large consumption of alcohol is also often associated with swelling, pain and discomfort in the genitals, painful urination, pelvic infection or genital herpes.
